September 19, 2017

A new school year.
We started our day with room 12 chatter and then we worked on a math problem.
We do our lunch attendance on the smart board.
In Gym we had time with free equipment and we played a game.
In French we are working on a Detective puzzle.
In Theme, we are planning to discover our islands.  We have to plan what we are going to take.  We also have to think about whether it will fit in our sea chest.  Some of us have finished colouring our island maps.

May 19

Today we did a work sheet in math.
In writing we edited our stuff we were writing.
In french we did are videos for our houses.
In theme we kept working on our paper skeleton.
No school Monday.  :-D

May 17

We started our day by doing math. In math we did some fractions.  We learned about how to compare using two fractions. In gym, we played a game  to practice for the baseball game. We played in two teams.  But when they pitched it to you had to kick it.  We continued to work on our I am a Winnipeger and Zoo writing.
MARY RETURNED!!! She taught us about water. It is the last time were going to see her this year.
We started a writing about our grade five memories.  In music we played on the drums. We played a game where we need to communicate just using the drums.

May 15

At school today in first period we had bus ridership we talked about bus safety rules like do not distract the bus driver and do not go into the danger zone outside the bus.  We had a short gym class, then we had class meeting.  In the class meeting we had to tell someone about what we were thankful for or something we what to change.  When it was writing we worked more about our  I am a Winnipeger poems.   It's about what we like and do in Winnipeg.  In french today we worked more on our french house and glued it onto paper.  During theme we corrected our answers in our body system booklets.

May 12

Today in gym we played a game called Yoshi and no one won in the game we played.
Our class is participating in a time capsule and 2 students talked about what we will put in the time capsule and we are probably put a book in the time capsule. In french we continued  to colour our house and soon we will share our house with the class.  We will  have to say what is in our house in french.  In theme we watched the skeletal and respiration system's presentation.  They were the last to do there presentation and we watched a movie trailer from the two groups like the others and like always we did a booklet on the systems after the presentation. After recess we continued on the booklet. Then we did our agendas and our teacher read to us.

May 11

In math we did scoot - adding and subtractions decimals and we write it in the correct box on the paper. We had to go to different desks to fill 24 boxes on the paper, and then the teacher told us the answers and we had to check our answer on the paper.

In writing we had to work on our zoo writing and if we agree or disagree. We had to make sure that the spelling was correct for our good copes and we had to think about what would get the readers to read the whole thing. 

In theme we had two more presentations and because it was a nice day outside we went into the courtyard and worked on our papers about the human body.  We all had different body systems to learn about and tell the class. 

May 10

We watched a video about how to play tetherball today. In Gym we played a game with scoops that's almost like ringette and Laccross.  In Buddies we paired up with a buddy and read to them and they read to us. Some people had to pair up with 2 buddies. In Writing we did our zoo persuasive writing. Our arguments are for or against zoos. We have to convince the reader that zoos are either good or bad. In Music we used drums and played 3 songs in 3 groups. We started playing individually and then played all together. In Theme we started to present our body system groups with an iMovie trailer, an oral component, a handout, and a demonstration. The total marks for all of them is 50. Some of us stayed in to finish our projects. In Writing after last recess we did more.

April 9

Today some of us had a volleyball game. Today we had a sub gym teacher for gym. Today we got caught up in our projects. Today we practiced saying stuff in french.  We worked on our projects again in theme. Today we had music and we played the drums for the grade ones. Today Ms. Pattie read us a new book.

April 8

In math we worked on our tenths, hundredths and thousandths place value. In music we were playing the drums. We had library today. In French we worked on the kitchen and the house words. Volleyball club is meeting tomorrow at 8:55, remember your group number.

In theme we did our projects on the human body. We finished reading the book "Because of Mr. Terupt" and we will be moving to a new book, but not today. In writing we started writing our own piece either against zoos or for zoos.

May 5

Today in gym we were using scoops, and learned some tricks with a P.E. teacher and we played a game with the scoops.   We had a class meeting today.  In writing we did some more free verse poems.  In french we practiced saying our houses information.  In theme we worked on our body system projects in groups.  

May the Fourth ... be with you

Today in math we did centers, and in gym we played with the scooters and then with the scoops. In writing we did more poetry. In french we continued with the living room description and started the bathroom description. In theme we watched the respiratory system and continued our system projects and we also did a group write on what truth is, on paper.

May 3

Today we did our math centers. We had 2 periods today.

In writing we started doing a new unit on poems, first we finished our Haiku's, then we did Cinquains. We also talked about 'Should we have Zoos'. 

In french we shared what is in our houses and how many rooms we have.  we talked about what is in our living room.

In Theme we worked on our human body system projects and watched a video on the Nervous system.

Most of the girls in our classroom played volleyball [For fun].

Ms.Banks came in our classroom and said that we did a good job in the lunch room.  She said since it is starting to get sunny and warm that some of the kids can have their lunch outside.

May 1

Today in math we went in our math groups. Some of us played a math game, reflex, spyros, work alone, and work with Ms. Pattie. Today in gym we played a game called dodge basketball. In writing we read articles for or against zoos. In french we worked on saying words about our houses or apartments. In theme we worked in our groups for our human body system project. In music it was music Monday and we went outside and did music stations. Then Ms Pattie read.

Today we had math and continued with our math stations.
In music we watched some music videos.
In library we got out books. Always bring your book back!!!!!!

Today we returned to math centres.

We are working on our truth book pages good copy.

We did a French crossword puzzle.

In theme we are working on a quiz.

At our second writing period we read why zoos are good then we looked it was bad then we took notes on sticky notes. About the main sentence of the book and three things that we can relate too.

April 27

Today at gym was our last day of ringette. We played as the team we were in last time. In Class Meeting, we were talking about thanking someone for something they helped us with. We continued our truth drawings. We're starting a new Theme unit on the human body.  We have to research, then present on a system of the human body. A couple students in our class presented their WE fair project on the Battle of Detroit that happened in the War of 1812. We also made some Never Stop Milk bookmarks after we were done the truth drawings.

April 17

Today in math we did activities in a math book called Math for Smarty Pants on our whiteboards.  In writing we worked on a book that tell the difference about words like to, two, too.  In french we had a matching quiz about the aliens in our textbook and what their preferences.  In theme we talked about history like the British, the French the Indians and the battles they fought, like the Seven Year War, and we looked in textbooks for the significance of different wars, battles, and peace treaties.

April 12

Today we went to the library to talk about outside expectations and school rules.
In gym we played ringette and we practiced moving the ring with the stick.
In writing we did our memory writing and if you have finnished that, you time to free write about anything.
In french we had a quiz and we got a sheet about identifying the aliens in french.
In theme we wrote down a notes about the Metis and the Red River settlement.

April 10

Today in Gym we played a tag game. There were 2 yellow, 2 orange and 1 black tagger. Next week in gym were starting a new Unit.  We had a class meeting today. The first time spike went around we say something that were thankfull for. The second time spike went around we say something we want to change.  Today we had a special event. In the science room with Mary. We talked about green house gasses and how we can save energy and save water.  In French we were saying stuff in french. We also had a french test.  In Theme we were doing Canada's history and we had to sort the time and years of events. We used 2 text books. In Writing we did our 'moment writing'. We picked a moment and wrote about it. When we were done we listed the things we noticed in our writing, like setting, Similes etc.

April 7

Today we had gym and we played a team game called steal the bean bags. In math we did teacher time, speros, math games, reflex, and work by our selves. In heath the teacher read our stories. In french we learned how to read a story in french. In theme we did six science things. In writing we finished our in a moment stories.

April 6

In theme we put a egg in a jar with vinegar and every day we will watch to see what happen to the egg.  In math we got in groups of 5 and played different math games and activities. In french we read a book and we read along with the teacher.  In health we did "Maggie's Story" word splash and we had to write a story on paper about being safe on the internet and we had to use the words on the splash sheet. We also did a quiz about physical and chemical changes.

April 5

In gym we played a team game.  After gym we had buddies.   In heath we were talking about being home alone.  In music we had a substitute and we did a word search and played silent ball.  In theme we did science experiments.  In writing we had to write about a moment that we remembered strongly.

March 23

Today we finished our math booklets. We had to try to finish the whole booklet by the end of class.
Today in french we did a play with are groups of 3 in front of the whole class we had to say our script lines all in french and we did not get to look at are script. In theme we watched 2 videos on matter. We had to brainstorm characteristics of matter. We are doing a project on matter, Ms. Pattie put us in groups of 3 and 4 and we will have to make a project about it on explain everything.

March 15

Today we had math and we worked on our movie theatre math booklet. Next we had gym we could not do anything because we had our We Fair today so we just sat in our classroom and did a word search. Today it was We Fair. Then we did a break out box about the Big Friendly Giant and we got into 4 groups and we figured out what was inside.
Today we started to work on conferences. We started to figure out what we are going to show our parents. We read two chapters of Bearhaven. We did one of our energy diet challenge about not using electronics for 24 hours and we will have to do something that does not use up energy, like playing outside or drawing a picture.

March 14

In theme we worked on our science project for the We fair, some of the groups are done, and the ones who are done got to play with the Speros.
We need parents to sign up on our pledge form.
In French we got in groups and read our lines for the play that we are doing.
We had problem solving and we had to solve three problems.

March 13

In gym we played doctor dodgeball and there was a substitute teacher.
After gym we had buddies!
We had to work on our we fair projects.
In music we talked about Canada and we listened to the original version of the Canadian anthem 'O Canada''.  
In theme we watched a video about how to make a treaty and learned how a treaty works.
we also graphed the screen time we kept track of this weekend.  

March 10

Today we continued on our movie theatre math booklet.
Today was the last day of doing our science fair projects. Some of the kids got to paint their backboards for their fair projects.
In gym we did more fitness then had some free time. In music was the last day of recorders, some of the kids did the test for recorders.
We worked on and are done our question sheet in french.

March 6

Today in math we did balanced math. How it works is Ms. Pattie wrote an equation on the board like 3 + 5 = 5 + 3.  We had to explain if it was true or false.  In writing we worked on our energy project. It has to be done by March 10 and on March 14 we have to set it up. For 3 periods we found a quiet spot anywhere in the school and recorded our voices for our trading posters. We took pictures of our island and drew 3 things we wanted to trade. One poster had to be a crop the second had to be a mineral and the third one had to be something you made. At first recess we went outside, at lunch and afternoon recess we did not go outside. The field was like a BIG BIG BIG puddle! We were not allowed to go on the field. At the end of the day Ms. Pattie read Bearhaven to us.
Just a reminder that it is Early Dismissal tomorrow.

March 2

Today in math we did some division on whiteboards. and Miss. Pattie talked to us about our problems in division. In gym we played bench ball we had two seperate benches in stead of one big bench. In writing we worked on our big idea writing and typed it out. We also started on our energy tips and tricks.  During french we worked on our Acadian french writing; We had to translate it into english. In theme we continued working on our three trading items posters

Today in gym we had another class of badminton and finished the tournament for badminton.
Today in writing we wrote a letter about saving energy. We want people to sign our pledge form.  In french we watched Evangeline on youtube. After lunch Jamie Oliver came in and did some activities with us and told us some stories.  We will be doing some more activities with him in the coming weeks.

Classroom Energy Diet

Dear  Family and Relatives 

Is your energy bill too high?  Would you like to reduce it?  We have been participating in the the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge.  We are learning about the ways we waste energy and about alternative energy sources.

Non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels and coal cost money to acquire and once they are used, we have to get more.  Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal power are all sources of energy that don’t run out.  This means that we can use them over and over again.

We are asking you to participate in the challenge “Sign up or Sign out”.  We are asking you to pledge to make an effort to reduce your energy usage.  We have created an online pledge form.  We want as many people as possible to sign up to make an effort to reduce their energy usage.  

It’s easy to start reducing the energy you use.  You can:

• turn off lights when we leave a room
• turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth
• use electronics less
• turn off lights, unused electronics, and unplug chargers before you go to bed
• shorter showers
• turn off the tv when no one is watching
• use recyclable paper towels instead of air dryers
• recycle your empty cans and bottles

Reducing our energy consumption is good because it helps the earth. 

Renewable energy sources use less energy in the long run, and will cost less.  

Spread the word, encourage everyone you know to take part.  We are spreading this electronically, to reduce paper usage and conserve energy.  To take the pledge and sign up by going to energydiet.canadiangeographic.ca

In math today we did something called scoot where we have to go around the room and solve math questions.

In gym we continued our badminton tournament.

In writing we wrote about our big idea.

French was fun, we continued our three projects.

In theme we had to think on what we would trade on our island.

February 23

Today we had gym. We now have badminton teams going on.  We had buddies. Usually we would go into their class and pick our buddies but half of the class picked inside our class.  We listened to a funny song in music called salt peanuts.  We had Spheros ready for us to do some coding. It was really fun. Spheros are little robots that you control with an iPad, you connect it with the bluetooth. It can do stunts, tricks and even tell your future!  We continued working on our we fair projects.
There's no school tomorrow!

February 22

Today we had math. We did long division before we had gym.

In gym we had a substitute and we played dodgeball

February 21

In math we used our white boards and we wrote large numbers in expanded form and words and standard. We had a sub in the morning, 3rd and the 4th period.

In music we did different  belts and learned a song on our recorder called Scotland is Burning. In french we did three things that are due soon.  In theme we looked at a picture and we had to copy off the smart board and we watched a video. and then we were writing notes about matter and mass and then we wrote examples of states of matter.

February 17

Today we had Gym, we played a badminton game called kings court. We had a short class meeting.  We thanked someone and or said something we wanted to change. In Theme we did some art. We did two sheets of art. One for the background and one for the project. We had a polar bear walk today at 11:00 AM. We walked around the school block. We did some work about our projects and had QR codes to help us with our work.

February 16

Today we had math and we did a work sheet, we had to write the numbers down in expanded form and more.  Then we had gym we played monster tag and we learned how to do a clear shot, a drop shot, and a smash shot.  We had writing, we wrote instructions on how to do something. Next we had french we had to remember ten lines from our scrips. Then we had theme we researched our energy projects with our groups. Then we silent read at our desks.

February 15

We had a field trip today at Golden gate to go see a play called Dib and Dob.  When we came back we wrote what we thought about the play .  In French we worked on writing 10 sentences and the translate the French words into English and we had to make our own story with French words that we know. In theme we worked with our science fair group and did a graph about weather.  Then we read a book called What to you do when you have a idea, then we had to draw a idea that will change the world.

February 10

Today we learned about polar bears in the gym, and we watched some videos.  The grade 2/3 classes have been learning about conservation.  We are having a polar bear spirit week next week.

In music we practiced and learned a new song on our recorders.

The weather finally improved and we got to go out side for all recesses. 

We had art today.  We practiced using dots to create value.  In theme we are working on tradable resources for our islands.  We brainstormed crops, industry and possible ground items we might find there and be able to use.

February 9

Today in gym, we practiced serving with a tennis racket and a partner. There was grade 5 intramural for the girls. We played Gladiator Ball. Today in Class Meeting we talked about kindness and the amount of disrespect and talking back in class. We talked about what we were thankful for and what we wanted to change in class. Miss Pattie is reading us a book called Secrets of Bearhaven. In Energy Miss Pattie gave us a partner and with our partner we read a book about certain types of books about energy.  Then we talked about the book and wrote about it.
In theme we had a word bank about the history of New France and we had to write a story about it with the words in the bank, we had to try to make it true! Today Miss Pattie talked about our report cards and that we don't need to stress about it and what you get is good, no matter what.
In French we did another vocabulary test.  We got our previous ones handed back. If the test we got had a sticker, that means we are improving! We also practiced the script. Miss Pattie also talked to us about our islands and crops. She talked about that if we all grew strawberries and we had some left over then we would not be able to trade with others because everyone already had them.
Today we all had indoor recess except for last recess.

February 8

Today we had math, we were doing division on paper there was 12 questions each one got harder and harder. In gym today we played a game that helped us with striking, one person stood on a star with a paddle while one person stood in a hoola-hoop and tried to catch what ever they were using.

In writing today we were handed back our grammar sheets where we had to find the proper way to use commas and apostrophes. In french we double checked our French option sheets where we had to choose the correct words, then we were handed back our french vocabulary tests.

We are going to build our own weather tools for theme.

February 7

Today we had a person come in to teach us how to make a bouncy ball.  She also taught us about

reactions with water and some other things.  One thing for cold and the warm then we did some problem solving and there were more then one way to do it. We also worked on our energy see, think and wonder with our two pictures. We had indoor recess today because it was too cold.

Today we have early dismissal. We also watched a video of weather in theme, and learned about some types of clouds. 

February 6

Today in Gym we had a sub and we played free-for-all tag and doctor dodgeball. We had Buddies with the grade 1s.  In Music we read because the choir was practicing. In theme we looked at some pictures and wrote about what we saw and thought and what we wonder, with Mrs. Steuart.  At the end of the day we listened to a book called Bearhaven.  We also discussed our Classroom Energy Diet Challenges.  We talked about the things we need to learn more about.

February 2

Today we did long division in math.
In music we had a substitute teacher and we played the xylophones.
We had library.
In french we finished our work sheet.
At lunch there was coding club in Ms.Pattie's room.

In theme we made a poster for weather rhymes.

February 1

Today we played predators and prey for the last time at gym.  We had class meeting today. We worked on a paper with two hands on it share it with a partner and write something we can do to be kind on it.We worked on kindness and how we can change our school.  We are working on a 'how to' book.  We did a french quiz today. We should know all the words on our scripts and quiz.  We worked on the important years of voyageurs and the fur trade. We then cut them out and sorted them together.  Some of us went to choir, that's only for choir people.

January 31

In math we continued with our division, we wrote our thinking in our math journal.  Mrs.Pattie made a division video for our blog if we forget it.
We also had gym and we played predators and prey.

After recess half of the class went to choir for 2 periods which left the rest of the class to partner up into groups of two, and each group played game on a math website .

We had a two periods of theme because we were in groups of two and we were making popplets about the Hudson Bay Co. and the Northwest Co.  After we had to mark on a map where all the forts were. A popplet is like a brain storm but instead with facts.

In the morning we went to see the play James and the Giant Peach. Jr. We got back befor lunch and we read all the way to lunch.

In theme our teacher read us a book called Energy Inland. Than we had to think about the book and what it was about. We had to talk about the different words and about the energy power.

January 27

Today we had jungle gym. We got something new, it was connect 4. In Buddies we got some buddies to read to us and we read to them. We did some catching up with subtraction and got subtraction homework. In Music we listened to the choir. We had 5 minutes to play janitor when we came back. In Theme we did energy presentations with 3 statements. We cut and glued answers and pictures. We continued after recess.

January 25

In math we started learning how to do long division. In music we had a substitute teacher. In writing, as a class, we thought of different things friends should be and qualities they should have and then we wrote a story about it. In french we learned how to say french words in English. In theme we continued our voyageur comics. After theme we had library. And then we did silent reading at our desks.

January 24

In theme we worked on our voyageurs comic. .In gym we played 4 rounds of boomer. We cleaned out our desks and our desk bins that had makers, glue, high lighters, pencil crayons. Ms.Pattie changed the desks and there is one short one and we get to sit any where we want. In french we translated another page. Its early dismissal today! It was sunglasses day and Happy January!

January 23

In math we started to learn how to do simple division.  We also read a book called the Multiplying menace Divides.
In writing we practiced using quotation marks to fix sentences that needed quotation marks.  We did the same thing with a page for commas.
Someone from our class won a Golden Gate t-shirt from the draw box at the Golden Gate open house.  In theme we worked on our comic page about a voyageur.  It had to be well underway by the end of the day.  In gym we had a substitute and we played bench ball and Ollie Ollie Octopus.
We had a substitute in class today.

January 20

Today we had problem solving. We paired up in partners and we did two problems on our white board and in our math journals. In Writing we edited passages from Fudge-a-mania by Judy Blume. In french we practiced our script. In theme we researched voyageurs and we will be making graphic novel one-pagers. We did some catching up with our energy savers statements and our research on hydro power and many others.

January 17

In music we had a sub and we played recorders. We practiced simple notes.
In math we did a cross number puzzle with multiplication questions.
In library we got to take out 3 books and some people only got to take out 1 or 2 books, because they hadn't returned their overdues.  In French we practiced our french scrips and we wrote French sentences and translated them into English.  In theme we did a lockbox challenge, we only had 45 minutes to solve questions to unlock the box about weather. It was girls vs boys, the girls won.
When you were done you had to finish your outstanding work.
Then we had to write about what a good friend is about.

January 16

Today we had a half gym. We played flag-tag again.

In french we danced and wrote in our french books and we learned the 9th page of our script.

This afternoon we had a work afternoon.  We had three tasks to finish by 3;15. We had to hand in our voyager characteristics drawings and writing, we had to finish our severe weather brochures, and we could continue with our energy inquiry.

Tomorrow we have library and everyone needs to bring their recorders.

January 13

Today in gym we played flag tag.
In math we did 'almost standard' multiplication.
In french we read our scripts and finished our french writing.
In theme we researched extreme weather like Thunderstorms, Tornados, Cyclones, and Blizzards. We also watched reading rainbow.  It was the book "Coming Tide".  It started our unit on Weather.
We started to work on different energy sources and took notes on them.  This is in preparation for starting our Classroom Energy Diet Challenge - it starts on the 30th.

Just a reminder that Middle School Open Houses start next week.  I will need to know which Middle School everyone is going to by the 27th.  Earlier is better.

Golden Gate is where most of the grade 5s go.  The principal from GG was here this morning and handed out information about their open house.

Hopefully the weather will be better next week.
Parents are reminded that students should not be arriving at school before 9:00.  There is no supervision until that time.

Family Math night is Jan. 26.  Everyone is encouraged to attend and get math ideas to work on at home.  Please let the school know if you are coming.

January 12

In problem solving we did a block puzzle. We made towers out of blocks. It has hard to keep them balanced, but it was fun.

In theme we did a scavenger hunt to save the world. Girls vs Boys. We had to solve the clues. The keys were scattered around the school. We made our own clues when we were done. 

In writing some of us researched and some of us drew our Voyager poster. We made rough drafts.

January 10

Today the Golden Gate Gators came to our school and played music for us.  The Golden Gate Choir came and sang for us. Some of the grade six kids showed us how to play some of their instruments.
In math we did multiplication questions on our white boards.
In writing Miss Pattie read us our winter writings and told us some good things to do next time we do writing.
We had extra recess this morning because the bell was not working.
It is early dismissal today!
Today was are first music class using are recorders.
